MYCELIUM TECH CO-OP

Advancing technological sovereignty for the solidarity economy by putting workers and their communities in control of their technological tools and infrastructure. Through deep, relational collaboration, we co-create solutions that serve both the material and moral imperatives of our partners.

We dream of a world where everyone has the power to create and adapt technology to meet the needs and desires of their own communities.

We strive to get there by shifting away from the current dynamic of a privileged few creating the tools we all use. We ground our work in these principles:

Relational Capacity Building

Our collaborators are the experts of their own experiences—the problems and possibilities that uniquely exist in their environment. We start from a strong relational foundation before engaging in any technical work, bringing design and development experience to co-create solutions that fit within their context. This means the tools we build are anchored to the actual needs of our partners.

Cooperative Digital Infrastructure

Instead of defaulting to proprietary tools, we adopt and build upon the open-source software ecosystem and develop our own custom tools when needed. This gives our communities deeper control over the technologies they use, a stronger foundation for support and customization, and the ability for others to adapt what we've built for their own contexts.

Ecosystem Growth

We believe in scaling horizontally through peer networks of autonomous groups and sharing learnings, resources, and capacity so our movement can have a wide reach without concentrating power within a single entity. We don't strive to become a giant enterprise competing for resources to grow indefinitely.

Economic Incentive Alignment

We aim to resource ourselves in alignment with our clients. We use sliding-scale pricing to proportionally charge organizations according to their revenue across our working relationship, rather than a one-time flat fee. As our partners grow their revenue, we grow ours too. We're continuously working toward funding models of pooled resources—via cooperative developers, federations, and other collective entities—that mirror the ecosystem we work in.

How We Support Our Partners

01

Technical Assistance

We help cooperatives and aligned organizations navigate the full lifecycle of their technology needs. This includes troubleshooting issues in existing platforms and interfacing with tech support on our partners' behalf; evaluating current systems and workflows to identify opportunities for improvement and streamlining; and integrating workflows across multiple platforms to reduce fragmented, manual processes. When new tools are needed, we research and recommend platforms tailored to specific needs, and support our partners in vetting software vendors—ensuring they get solutions that genuinely serve them at the best possible price. We also help with onboarding staff onto new systems. For organizations looking to move away from Big Tech platforms, we guide the transition to open-source or values-aligned alternatives where suitable options exist.

02

Custom Software Solutions

Sometimes the right tool for the job doesn't exist yet. When our partners have needs that aren't well served by off-the-shelf platforms, we work alongside them to collaboratively design and build custom software from the ground up. Our process is deeply relational—we take the time to get to know the people we're working with and understand the real context and constraints of each project, so that what we build is anchored in our partners' actual needs, not assumptions. This could look like a governance tool for cooperative decision-making, a member-facing platform, or a workflow application tailored to a specific operation—whatever the need calls for.
